Over the past several years, I have searched high and low for the best foundations for mature skin (for women over 40). If I’m honest, it’s not been easy. It’s not easy to find a foundation that plays nice with mature and aging skin!
Good thing I don’t give up easily. I have managed to find several foundation formulas that work for me and my aging skin!
Let’s dive in!
The best foundations for mature skin (women over 40+
Body Make-Up (Foundation for your whole body!)
I started using body make-up when I noticed that the appearance of my aging skin needed some much-needed improvements for our oldest daughter’s upcoming wedding.
I needed something that would look as natural as possible, and that wouldn’t transfer onto my clothing or anyone else’s! Enter Dior Body Make-Up!
I am thrilled with the results of this body foundation!
Dior face and body make-up is so versatile! So Water-resistant lasts all day and doesn’t transfer on my clothing. Great for pool parties!
Be sure to apply sunscreen first (it does not contain SPF) and then use a beauty sponge or body make-up brush to apply.
Use it on the tops of your hands and decolletage. You can also use it to cover scars and brown spots on your legs by adding your favorite body lotion to gives your legs a nice finish.
Kim Kardasians body make-up
This is so exciting! I just got my hands on the KKW body make-up. It was sold out worldwide for the longest time!
AND! I was lucky enough to find it on sale at Ulta (75% off!) I guess it was on sale because the packing is being updated (a name change, perhaps?)
So far, the coverage and the finish are really nice. The only problem is this body foundation requires a bit more blending than the Doir body make-up. That said-a a good body foundation brush is a must!
Moving forward, I will be putting this makeup to the test and will report back with an update soon.
Everyday foundations for mature skin:
Clarins UT Tint
Clarins UV Tinted moisturizer is my go-to everyday foundation these days. My holy grail for a fresh and dewy look, complete with 50 SPF! LOVE IT.
Perfect for every day around the house, for run quick errands, or the gym. The coverage is super light and does tend to slide if it’s humid (rare here in Arizona!)
So when it is humid, I suggest powering it lightly. (more on powder later…)
Even Better Foundation by Clinique
I still love Clinique foundations after all these years! Back in the day, I worked for Clinique as a makeup artist. Clinique is an amazing company and has some awesome products! I wear Clinique HAPPY every day!
Clinique’s Even Better Foundation is an awesome formulation for mature skin because it goes on clean and has a very nice natural-looking finish.
It’s a great everyday make-up. I wish it had a higher SPF. (Just 15 SPF)
It Cosmetic CC Cream
Its Cosmetics CC cream is my other favorite everyday go-to when I need full coverage/ and or staying power!
This foundation comes with 55 SPF +physical sunscreen and has a long list of yummy anti-aging ingredients, which is just what the dr. ordered.
The only thing is sometimes it’s almost a little bit too much coverage for every day. That being said- it just takes a bit more effort to blend it out (use a beauty sponge).
Then, when I want an even more natural finish -I add a small amount of my face moisturizer to it, which gives me a really nice dewy look that I love!
The best the best full coverage foundation for mature skin (for special events + photoshoots)
Charolette Tibury’s Airbrush Flawless Foundation
I discovered the Charlotte Tilbury make-up line when shopping for the perfect foundation for my daughter’s wedding. And although it is a bit expensive-I love it!!
The Airbrush flawless foundation’s finish is excellent!
It’s a nice natural finish that is buildable. And it’s got incredible staying power! Perfection for special events and photoshoots.
I love it for photographs because of its semi-matte finish; it won’t transfer, which is key when wearing formal wear or if you are going to be changing outfits-like for a photoshoot.
Prime. Powder. Set.
Don’t unestimated the power of a good primer! For years, primers didn’t seem to be worth the time or the money. I was so wrong. Primer is a game-changer.
Primer is essentially a foundation for foundation! It extends the wear of the foundation and helps with the final finish by addressing things like large pores and uneven texture.
Like foundations, there are a ton of face primers on the market. And…it will take a bit of trial and error before you find your favorite.
I wrote another article all about the best face primers mature skin that I think you will find to be super helpful and point you in the right direction.
Some people think that powder is the aging women’s worst enemy. I used to think that too. Until I did a little investigating at the makeup counter and on YouTube and found a thing or two about powder.
No lie, the powder can be tricky. It’s important to use a good quality face powder and how to apply it properly.
Laura Mercier Translucent powder
Laura Mercier Translucent Powder is the bomb! The best! Don’t mess with anything else. It’s a tad more expensive, but it lasts forever, and it’s just the best. Plain and simple.
I use it (use a small amount on a good powder brush and tap off the excess) just under my eyes and in my marionette lines to lock down the foundation and keep it from settling into lines. It took me a bit of trial and error to get the whole powder thing right- but now I’m a believer.
And last but not least…
When my make-up is done, and set it with Urban Decay’s ALL NIGHTER setting spray. This is the best setting spray I have ever tried. And I have tried many!
All-nighter setting spray locks down your makeup and gives it a nice dewy finish. And it just feels so refreshing and yummy!
Setting spray gives foundation extra lasting power AND prevents foundation from transferring, which is awesome when wearing a mask. UGH. (i.e., during a global pandemic!)
The trick to a beautiful natural finish:
Blend. Blend. Blend.
Blending is everything. Blending is even more important when we’re talking about foundation + aging and mature skin! I can’t stress it enough.
The holy grail for blending is a beauty sponge. But!
Don’t buy expensive ones. It’s crazy what they get for a simple blending sponge these days! I get
a bag full of beauty sponge knock-offs that work just a well.
And when it gets too old and dirty…I don’t mind throwing it away and replacing it with a new one.
Have you ever tried to wash a beauty sponge?? It’s a ridiculous chore!
Just buy the cheaper ones! You will thank me.
So there you have it!
