Blogging can be so much fun, rewarding, and even profitable! But! There is a learning curve and with so much to learn it can be easy to get frustrated. Be patient with yourself. Take it one step at a time.

I hope that this first post in my HOW TO BLOG series will help and encourage you to start your own blog!

How to start a WordPress Blog in 10 Easy Steps:

1. Choose A Topic.

I suggest that you pick a topic you are super passionate about so you won’t get bored writing about it. Think about your interests & hobbies and your obsessions! Me?!

I landed on xochristine . I knew I wanted to have my name in the name. XO, Christine came to me because I sign most of my comments, emails, and letters -xo, christine or xo, C.

My goal for my blog is to be able to share, inform and inspire my readers. And when I write, I write as if though I were talking to a friend.

Are you a dog lover? A cook, perhaps? Are you a beauty or style buff? An artist? Maybe you are a wanderlust, and so a travel blog would be perfect for you. Are you a stay-at-home mom? Then what about a mommy blog?!

The possibilities are endless!

Once you’ve decided on the topic of your blog, it’s time to brainstorm a name.

2. Choose a name for your blog.

Choosing a blog name can be tricky! Your blog name is one of the most important steps when starting a blog. I know that I have struggled with this step.

The blog name and its domain is what people see first, and it sets the tone for what people think about your blog as a whole.

Think about what your blog is about, who your target audience will be and what your writing style will be.

A few things to help you decide on a blog name:

  • Use a name generator
  • Have a good old fashion brainstorming session with your tribe.
  • Reach for the Thesaurus.
  • Research other blogs like the one you want to write for inspiration.
  • Use Abbreviations or Acronyms.
  • Consider another language.
  • Think about using your name or part of your name.

Once you think you’ve got it nailed down – it’s time to purchase your domain. Yay!

3. Purchase a domain.

A domain is your blog address on the internet. There are several places you can go to purchase a domain. I buy mine at BlueHost, which is also where I host my blogs. (makes things super easy to keep it all under one roof!)

When searching for your domain name, you might find that the .com is taken. Not to worry! There are so tons of domain extensions these days.

4. Set up your hosting account

Alright! It’s time to decide where you will be parking your blog, which is called hosting. Think of it this way -If your domain is your car, then your hosting account is your garage.

If you’ve registered your domain with BlueHost, I would suggest using them for hosting as well.

I currently use BlueHost for my hosting. They make it super easy to get started and they are super affordable too!

5. Install WordPress

Installing WordPress is as simple as a few easy clicks. Bluehost makes it easy. Just take your time and follow the instructions and you will be off to the races in no time!

6. Pick a theme.

So here’s the thing…You will see free themes available right there through WordPress that you can use to get started. You can always update it later if money is an issue.

BUT! If you can afford it- I would highly recommend purchasing a theme.

You can get a really nice WordPress theme with tons of bells & whistles for $30-100 which is well worth the cost.

While picking a theme is super fun- it can also be a bit overwhelming since there are thousands and thousands of them available.

Here are my favorite places to buy themes:

  • Creative Market– Creative Market has thousands of graphics, blog templates, stock photos and fonts at really great prices
  • ThemeForest.net– I have purchased two WordPress Themes from Themeforest and love them both! I highly recommend checking them out!

EXTRA TIP: I would HIGHLY SUGGEST buying a theme the comes with demo content.

Demo content is the content (including images, mock logo, etc.) and the settings of the theme, as it is seen in the example when you purchased it. Trust me; you will thank me later.

7. Install & Customize your theme

Installing your theme is easy.

There is a bit of a learning curve, but stay calm and follow the instructions that come with the WordPress theme you purchased.

Bluehost also has tons of tutorials available and a great support team if you need further help.

Once you’ve got the theme installed- you will need to make sure you have installed all the necessary plugins that help the theme to run properly.

8. Install Demo Content

Once the theme and plugins are up and running-hopefully, you took my advice and purchased a theme that has demo content.  If so, follow the instructions and install. This will help give you a little push in the right direction when it comes to customization.

Demo content is your friend, my friend!

Alright, alright, alright! Now you’re cooking with gas!

9. Start adding pages!

Begin with an About Page and a Contact Page.

This is pretty straightforward. And remember- you can always go back and fancy these pages up later.

Just get the basics taken care of.  There should be an about page and a contact page already added to your blog via your theme.

Just edit the about page adding a short bio about yourself or your brand and include a photograph.

Most themes include a contact form within the contact page.

Just add a little verbiage before the form and then follow the theme’s instructions on how to set up your email form.

Don’t forget to test it to make sure it’s working properly.

10. Write your first blog post!

Ok! There is a ton- I do mean a TON of information out there about how to write a proper blog post.
