The Best Nighttime Skincare Routine for Mature Skin!

Start with a Luxurious Bath or Shower

Before diving into your skincare routine (and if you’ve got the time), indulge in a warm, soothing bath or shower.

Allow the warm water to envelop you, relieving tension and stress accumulated throughout the day. Opt for gentle, hydrating cleansers formulated specifically for mature skin to cleanse away impurities without stripping away natural oils.

Consider adding aromatic bath oils or bath salts infused with nourishing ingredients like essential oils or moisturizing agents to hydrate and soften the skin.

Exfoliate to Renew (2-3 times per week)

For your body and face, exfoliation plays a crucial role in revitalizing your skin, promoting a smoother, more radiant complexion.

Incorporate a gentle exfoliating scrub into your routine 2-3 times a week to slough away dead skin cells and stimulate cell turnover.

Body Exfoliation

Choose a scrub specifically formulated for larger surface areas, like the arms, legs, and torso.

Look for body scrubs enriched with exfoliating particles such as sugar, salt, or crushed fruit seeds to buff away dull, rough skin and reveal a smoother, more youthful-looking complexion.

Concentrate on rough patches like elbows, knees, and heels, massaging the scrub in circular motions to promote circulation and enhance skin renewal.

Facial Exfoliation

Opt for a facial scrub with fine granules or chemical exfoliants like alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) or beta hydroxy acids (BHAs) to unclog pores and refine skin texture without causing irritation.

Apply the scrub using gentle circular motions, focusing on areas prone to congestion or roughness, such as the T-zone and cheeks.

After exfoliating, rinse thoroughly with warm water to remove any residue, then follow up with a hydrating moisturizer or body oil to lock in moisture and keep skin soft and supple from head to toe.

Double-cleanse your face.

Start by double-cleansing your face. Trust me on this one.

Double cleansing at night is so important! Double cleansing is key to a good nighttime skincare routine for mature skin. We’ve got to do everything we can!

Double cleansing helps remove the sunscreen, make-up, and grime from the day, giving your skincare products a better chance of working.

First, cleanse with an oil-based cleanser and then a water-based cleanser.

It may seem like overkill, but I promise it’s worth the extra step!

I use Cliniques to take the day off balm (heavenly!), followed by Cerave Hydrating Facial Cleanser.

I’ve become obsessed with Cerave products!

Cerave is an excellent drugstore skincare brand popular with all the beauty gurus on YouTube and dermatologists.

nighttime skincare routine tone and clarify the skin

Tone and Clarify Mature Skin

Back in the day,  I was a make-up artist for Clinique.

And fell in love with many of their skincare products. And still, use many of clinique’s products.

I swear by clarifying lotion #2. I have tried other toners and clarifying lotions, but I always go back to my old standby.

When my skin is dull and needs extra exfoliation, I reach for this toner from The Ordinary.

It contains glycolic acid and does the trick without over-drying my skin.

Apply Serums for Mature Skin

Serums are highly concentrated formulations designed to hydrate, tone, and renew your skin’s appearance.

Most serums contain powerful antioxidant ingredients that fight against harmful free radicals and protect your skin from damage.

Whether you’re looking for a lightweight serum that absorbs quickly into your skin or a thicker formulation that provides extra nourishment, serums are excellent additions to any skincare routine for mature skin.

I Love, love, love my serums!

Serums that I incorporate into my nighttime skincare routine for mature skin:

Hyaluronic Acid Serum

Hyaluronic acid is a powerful humectant that attracts and retains moisture, helping to plump and hydrate the skin which in turn helps to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Vitamin C Serum

The Holy Grail of Serums for mature skin!

Vitamin C is a potent antioxidant that helps to brighten the skin, fade dark spots and hyperpigmentation, and promote collagen production.

Incorporating a vitamin C serum into your nighttime routine can help even out skin tone and improve overall radiance.

Retinol Serum

Retinol, a form of vitamin A, is known for its anti-aging properties.

It helps to stimulate collagen production, improve skin texture, and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Peptide Serum

Peptides are amino acids that help to support collagen and elastin production, making them ideal for firming and lifting the skin.

Peptides are said to help improve skin elasticity and reduce sagging.

Niacinamide Serum

Niacinamide, also known as vitamin B3, is a versatile ingredient that helps to strengthen the skin barrier, reduce inflammation, and improve the appearance of enlarged pores and uneven skin tone.

I have found that Incorporating a niacinamide serum into my nighttime routine has helped address multiple skincare concerns including the appearance of my large pores.

Antioxidant Serum

Antioxidants help to protect the skin from environmental damage and oxidative stress, which can contribute to premature aging.

Look for serums containing antioxidants such as  Ferulic and Resveratrol to help keep your skin looking youthful and radiant.

Tips for using serums for mature skin:

When incorporating serums into your nighttime skincare routine, apply them after cleansing and toning but before moisturizing.

Gently massage a few drops of serum onto your face and neck, focusing on areas of concern.

Allow the serum to fully absorb before applying moisturizer to lock in the active ingredients and maximize their benefits.

Use Retin-A or Retinol

Retin-A is The holy grail of skincare for mature skin. Retin-A is a prescription medicine used to treat the symptoms of acne, fine lines, and wrinkles.

I use Retin-A 2-3 times a week after serums and before moisturizers.

Retinol products are available over the counter and are also very effective in treating the signs of aging.

Apply a Good Moisturizer for Mature Skin

When we are talking moisturize- I’m talking about your entire body. Since I live in Arizona, I am lotion-obsessed.

The truth is Dry skin= and older-looking skin.

Moisturizer for Face:

It can be hard to know which moisturizer to choose.

I use Cervae’s PM lotion and Clinique’s Moisture Surge. These products come highly recommended by dermatologists and have a great price point—a major plus these days.

Moisturizer for Body:

I have an aversion to dry skin.

So, in addition to moisturizing the heck out of my entire body, I also do dry brushing at least three times a week.

Dry brushing helps the skin shed dead skin cells and will help the skin absorb the moisturizer better & stay silky smooth.

It’s dry here in the low desert.

We run a humidifier in our home to keep the humidity levels just right. According to Mayo Clinic, the ideal humidity level in your home should be between 30% and 50%.

The correct humidity levels in your home can help with sleep, skin, and many other health concerns.

A bonus is my plants love the extra humidity too!

Treat your lips to extra hydration with a nourishing lip mask.

Apply the lip mask generously to the lips before bed to replenish moisture, soften dry, chapped lips, and restore a plump, youthful appearance by morning.

Get your Beauty Sleep.

A good skincare routine and good quality products are essential, but sleep may be the closest thing to a fountain of youth.

Our bodies repair themselves and recover while we sleep. The key is to get 7 to 9 quality hours each night. I know that sometimes that is easier said than done.

Tips + tricks for a better night’s sleep:

  • Go to bed at the same time every night
  • Wear blue light glasses when on screens
  • Keep bedroom nice and cool
  • Meditate: Try meditation to help you drift off to dreamland.
nighttime skincare routine for mature skin taking supplements

Last But Not Least: Take Vitamins + Supplements

Take a good multivitamin to cover all the bases, and add the necessary supplements you need to help keep your skin supple, your bones strong, and your brain and body age well.

After consulting with my doctor and doing a ton of research online, I take what some call an un-Godly about vitamins and supplements.

I’ve organized all my vitamins and supplements in one of those handy dandy organizers (like older adults use) LOL.

I take my supplements twice daily. I take some of my supplements in the morning with breakfast and then take my nighttime supplements at bedtime.

  1. Absolutely doable, but it can seem overwhelming when you are first starting, I think. Once you get into a habit, it’s so much easier.
I keep thinking I should try dry brushing. You really think it makes a difference? We have found that a water filter for our shower also is helpful for our dry skin in the desert.
