The Signs of Aging

As we age, our hands can lose their youthful vibrancy and look much older than our actual age. Signs of aging on the hands can include wrinkles, crepey skin, age spots, and more prominent veins.

By the end, you will have a better understanding of how to prevent premature aging on your hands and the best treatments to help make you have younger-looking hands in no time!

Want to learn how to make your hands look younger?

Let’s get started!

improve the appearance of aging hands by wearing sunscreen

1. SUNSCREEN: The Best Preventative Anti-aging Treatment

One of the best anti-aging treatments for aging hands is prevention. Sun exposure is a big concern.

Excess sun exposure on the back of the hands leads to sun spots (or liver spots), uneven skin tone, loose skin, and dry, scaly skin.

And let’s not forget it can cause skin cancer.

One of the best ways to help hands look younger and young is to apply sunscreen to the backs of the hands daily!

A broad-spectrum sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 50 or higher will go a long way to prevent future UV damage and lessen the appearance of age spots and wrinkles on your hands.

Apply sunscreen even when you don’t think you will need it.

Believe it or not- the sun’s harmful UV rays come through windows. That’s why we tend to have more sun damage on the sides of our faces and hands.

And don’t forget to reapply sunscreen often!

Apply Sunscreen before going to the nail salon.

Another good reason to wear sunscreen to help hands stay younger is that a recent study found that the nail lamps at salons used to cure nails can cause DNA damage to the skin, resulting in premature aging and possibly cancer.

improve the appearance of aging hands with exfoliation

2. Exfoliation is an Excellent Treatment for Aging Hands

Exfoliation is a process of removing dead skin cells from the surface of your skin, which helps to reveal brighter and more youthful-looking skin.

There are two main types of exfoliating treatments: Physical and chemical exfoliation.

Physical Exfoliation of the hands:

Physical or mechanical exfoliation involves scrubbing with an abrasive material such as washcloths, specialized beauty tools such as exfoliating brushes or gloves, loofahs, and face or body scrubs.

Chemical Exfoliation of the hands:

Chemical exfoliation involves using alpha-hydroxy (AHA) or beta-hydroxy (BHA) acids to dissolve the bonds between dead skin cells, revealing fresher and brighter skin.

Chemical exfoliation can be more effective than physical exfoliation, as it can penetrate deeper into the skin’s layers.

Both types of exfoliation can help improve your skin’s texture and appearance.

By exfoliating your hands regularly, you can help reduce wrinkles, age spots, and other signs of aging on your hands.

Exfoliation can also help to improve circulation in the skin, which will help to keep your hands looking young for longer.

Professional exfoliation treatments for aging hands:

An experienced aesthetician performs professional exfoliation treatments to exfoliate and rejuvenate the skin on your hands deeply.

These professional treatments typically involve manual or chemical exfoliation techniques, such as microdermabrasion, chemical peels, fruit acid peels, and lactic acid peels.

Removing the outer layer of the skin can help stimulate cell turnover, reduce wrinkles and age spots, and make the hands appear smoother and more youthful.

Professional exfoliation treatments are a great way to get quick results for aging hands, but you can also exfoliate your hands at home.

List popular products to exfoliate hands:

3. Dry Brushing: Dry brushing is a great way to remove dead skin cells from the skin’s surface without irritating it.

Look for dry brushes with soft bristles and a gentle cleansing solution. I wrote an entire article about dry brushing the body if you want to learn more about dry brushing. 🙂

4. Enzyme Exfoliants: Enzyme exfoliants can gently remove dirt, impurities, and dead skin cells from the hands.

Look for enzyme exfoliants that contain natural ingredients like papaya or pineapple extract.

How to make old hands look younger in no time! by wearing gloves

4. Wear Gloves to Protect Your Hands From the Signs of Aging

Gloves protect hands from harsh chemicals, hot water, dirt, and bacteria, preventing skin damage and premature aging.

Additionally, gloves can provide insulation against extreme temperatures, helping to reduce dryness or irritation.

Consider wearing gloves while gardening, washing dishes, in cold weather, and when driving.

Yes! Driving gloves! Driving gloves help protect hands from aging by shielding them from the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays.

According to Skincancer.org, most glass blocks UVB rays pretty well, but it doesn’t block UVA rays.

Windshields are treated to shield drivers from some UVA, but side, back, and sunroof windows usually aren’t.

So when you’re in your car, you should protect yourself from the sun by wearing sunscreen, long sleeves and even driving gloves.

5. Anti-aging Serums for Aging Hands and Skin

Anti-aging serums are specially formulated products that contain active ingredients that can help to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines, as well as promote collagen production for firmer skin.

These ingredients typically include antioxidants such as vitamin C, retinol, and peptides which help to protect against free radical damage while encouraging new cell growth.

They also typically contain hyaluronic acid to help draw moisture into the skin and lock it in.

With regular use, anti-aging serums can help to reveal younger-looking skin with improved skin texture and tone.

I apply serums to my hands twice daily during my morning and night skincare routine.

6. Retin-A + Retinol (The holy grail in anti-aging treatments)

Both over-the-counter and prescription topical creams containing retinol or retinoic acid can improve brown spots on your hands. Improving those dark spots will make your hands look a lot younger!

Retin-A is the gold standard of anti-aging creams. If you can, have your doctor prescribe Retin-A to help with the signs of aging on your hands and lessen the appearance of age spots.

I suggest retinol hand cream if you can’t get your hand on a prescription. I get it on Amazon, and I like it.

A little goes a long way, and it’s so affordable!

How to make old hands look younger- with laser treatments

7. Laser Treatments for Aging Hands

Now we’re cooking with gas! Laser skin resurfacing treatments can bring about more dramatic results to make hands look younger!

Preformed by med spas, a board-certified dermatologist, or at a plastic surgeon’s office, laser treatments for hand aging are a non-invasive cosmetic procedure that provides big results with minimal downtime.

This treatment helps reduce wrinkles and fine lines, even skin tone and texture and promotes collagen production for firmer skin.

The Most Common Anti-aging Laser Lasers:

1. Ablative Laser Resurfacing: Removes the top layers of skin on the back of your hands to reduce wrinkles and other signs of sun damage.

2. Non-ablative Laser Resurfacing: Less intense than ablative treatments and does not remove any layers of skin, instead stimulating collagen production for firmer skin.

3. Erbium Laser Resurfacing: Reduces fine lines and wrinkles, and sun damage in a gentler way, as it does not remove any layers of skin.

4. Fractional Lasers: Fractional laser resurfacing uses high-energy pulses of erbium or CO2 laser energy to remove the outer layer of aging, damaged skin cells to replace it with new, youthful-looking skin. (source)

5. Photofacial Treatments: Photofacial laser treatments or Intense Pulsed Light (IPL photofacial) are used to minimize redness and even out skin tone and texture, removing any discoloration or age spots.

6. Radiofrequency Treatments: These treatments are often used to tighten and firm the skin, reducing wrinkles and improving elasticity.

Laser treatments for hands can be expensive, but they are among the best hand treatments for aging hands to make hands look younger.

dermal fillers for anti-aging hands

8. Dermal Fillers: a new treatment for wrinkled hands

Dermal fillers are a type of injectable cosmetic treatment used to plump and fill areas on the hands that may have lost volume due to aging.

Fillers for the hands are commonly used to fill out shallow wrinkles, such as on the backs of hands and knuckles.

They add volume in areas where fat has been lost, making them an ideal anti-aging treatment for hands. Overall, dermal fillers are a great way to restore youthfulness to aging hands.

The results of dermal fillers are typically long-lasting, with most treatments lasting up to 2 years.

Additionally, the treatment itself is relatively quick and has minimal downtime.

With any cosmetic procedure, you must consult a board-certified dermatologist or plastic surgeon who can provide more information on what treatment is proper for you.

Here’s a video from my favorite YouTube Beauty gurus, Angie from Hot and Flashy.

I have to say, the results look pretty amazing! However, I’m not sure I can justify the cost right now. What do you think?

Be sure to weigh it down in the comments below.

9. Manicures and use Nail Treatments.

Of course, healthy and manicured nails go a long way in helping hands’ appearance. In addition, bio-weekly manicures are great for making you look younger.

As I mentioned, my nails have gotten weak and brittle with age AND from years and years of gel and acrylic manicures.

So, during the Covid lockdown, I had to break the acrylic and gel manicures cycle.

Hard as Hoof!

I found the best nail-strengthening cream out there! Hard as hoof (I know it’s a strange name) has been around for over 25 years.

I have to say it’s like a miracle! My nails have gotten so much stronger!

If you’ve got weak, brittle nails-it’s the best $8 you will ever spend!
